Even though Roomful of Blues’ lineup has changed over the years, the band has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world. Currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. In 2010, singer Phil Pemberton took over the vocal duties, bringing his sweet and soulful vocals and adding another bright new dimension to the jazzy, jump-blues musical roots. Their winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul remains their calling card, as does their ability to fill the dance floor. Along with newer members, bassist John Turner, trumpeter Doug Woolverton, drummer Chris Rivelli, and keyboardist Rusty Scott, and longtime members baritone and tenor saxophonist Mark Earley, tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille , Roomful keeps on rockin’ in 2015.

Roomful of Blues, according to DownBeat magazine, “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.” Since 1967, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing, rock ‘n’ roll, jump, blues and soul has earned it five Grammy Award nominations and a slew of other accolades, including seven Blues Music Awards.
With a non-stop performance schedule for over 45 years, Roomful of Blues has earned critical, popular and radio success and a legion of fans around the globe. including the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll for “Best Blues Band”.

RED BANK – Yes, it's true: Bruce Springsteen did once perform 'Achy Breaky Heart.'
That — and tons of other rarities — made the March 23, 1993 rehearsal show at the Count Basie Theatre a Springsteen concert that fans still rave about to this day.

'It's definitely a top-5 show of mine of all time, and that's saying a lot since it was 'The Other Band,' said Toms River resident Ted Brych, who has attended more than 400 Springsteen shows, traveling to venues all over the U.S. and the world. The setlist, Brych said, 'was off the charts.'
Brych's view of the show is shared by many others who were there, even though it featured Springsteen with the so-called 'Other Band,' a reference to the players The Boss used during his 'Human Touch/Lucky Town' tour in 1992 and 1993. The tour began less than three years after Springsteen notoriously fired the E Street Band in October 1989.
Keyboard player Roy Bittan was the only E Streeter to join Springsteen on 1992-93 world tour, which featured many Los Angeles-area musicians like Shane Fontayne on guitar, Zach Alford on drums and Crystal Taliefero, who played guitar, contributed percussion and backround vocals, and -- shocking some fans --even played Clarence Clemons' famed saxophone part during Springsteen's classic 'Born to Run.'
Springsteen and Holiday Express: A show to remember
Back in 1993, Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa and their two young children were living mostly in Los Angeles, and the days of spontaneous club appearances at the Jersey Shore seemed to be over.
Many fans were still grousing about the E Street Band's dismissal, even though an 11-night stand at the then-Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford in the summer of 1992 had received mostly positive reviews. Still, ticket demand for those shows was not as strong as it had been during Springsteen and the E Street Band's triumphant 10-show stand at the arena during the Born in the U.S.A. tour.
A nine-week European tour was scheduled to begin on March 30, 1993 in Scotland. Springsteen chose to prepare for the European tour not in L.A., but at the Basie in Red Bank. On Sunday, March 21, he decided to do a rehearsal show on Tuesday.
'By performing a unique show here in New Jersey rather than in California, where he now officially resides and where his November MTV special was filmed, Springsteen regained a bit of the special bond he had enjoyed with longtime Shore fans,' Asbury Park Press correspondent Robert Santelli wrote.
Remembering Clarence Clemons' club, Big Man's West
Tickets for the rehearsal show were $10 each. They were distributed through the Community Food Bank in Hillside, long a favorite Springsteen charity, the Institute for Children With Cancer and Blood Disorders, radio station WDHA-FM in Morristown, the Monmouth County Arts Council, which then owned the Basie, to friends of the theater and to some smart fans like Brych, who heard a rumor about a possible show and went to hang out by the Monmouth Street theater early in the afternoon.
'As show time neared, those who had tickets via The Food Bank, etc., started showing up and entering the theater,' Brych remembered. 'Finally we got the word that we all were hoping for: they had tickets and were going to let us in.' Donations were requested for the Food Bank and Brych happily dropped $40 into a bucket before taking a seat towards the front of the theater's balcony.
Contest winners tour Asbury Park's legendary Upstage Club
Meanwhile, Billy Smith and his wife, Ruth, were sitting front-row center. Smith, who previously co-owned the Asbury Park Rock n'Roll Museum with Stephen Bumball, was operating 'The Rock Exchange' music memorabilia store in Red Bank at the time of the Basie show.
The Smiths had gotten their tickets through Springsteen's long-time personal assistant, Terry Magovern, but when they went to the theater, someone they didn't know was standing in the aisle with a stack of tickets, upgrading anyone who asked. 'I handed him my stubs and he gave me front-row seats right next to our old friend Obie,' Smith recalled, referring to Obie Dziedzic, Springsteen's former assistant and most dedicated fan.
Springsteen was interviewed by MTV before the show and the soundcheck was actually filmed by an MTV crew. Other fans were able to get into the show when it was already underway by arriving at the theater and tossing $20 or $30 into a bucket for charity.
E Street Band: Vini Lopez exhibit opens with a song
When the concert began, the surprises started immediately, as Springsteen kicked off the show with 'Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?' a song from his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., that he had not performed live since 1975. The Boss continued to shock the audience, rolling out a world premiere: 'This Hard Land,' an outtake from the Born in the U.S.A. album that was played acoustically this night.
'We all had the bootleg studio version of it, and it was one of those great songs that always made you wonder why it wasn't ever officially released or done up until that moment,' Brych said. 'This Hard Land' became a regular part of Springsteen's setlists on the tour following the Basie rehearsal. During the upcoming 1993 world tour, Springsteen would continue to open with a trio of acoustic songs, just as he had done at the Basie on March 23.
Other setlist shockers included 'When You're Alone,' from the 1987 album, Tunnel of Love, which was performed live for the first time and 'Blinded by the Light,' done solo acoustic, the first time this song from Springsteen's first album had been played since 1976. Springsteen read the lyrics of Blinded by the Light from a notebook perched on a music stand.
E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg came onstage and took his familiar spot behind the drum kit for 'Glory Days.'
Press' Joan Pikula, an early backer of Bruce Springsteen, passes away
But the biggest 'wow' moment of the night came with a seemingly spontaneous cover that The Boss performed after someone in the crowd shouted out the request. This was 'Achy Breaky Heart,' a massive 1992 hit for singer Billy Ray Cyrus that's been parodied by everyone from 'Weird Al' Yankovic (Achy Breaky Song) to the Animaniacs (Empty Hollow Head).
Some hate it: Blender magazine ranked it Number 2 in its list of the Worst Songs Ever. Some love it: VH1 has it ranked as Number 87 on the station's list of the 100 best songs of the 1990s. Count Springsteen in the latter category.
Springsteen was tuning his acoustic guitar when someone called for the song, causing him to laugh and joke, 'That's like telepathic, because I was thinking about doing that song,' Brych said.
A late night haunt of Springsteen and the Asbury Jukes
'I was laying in bed the other night (and) I said 'What would really bend everybody's minds...Achy Breaky Heart'..' Springsteen joked before starting the song. After an acoustic verse and chorus, the band kicked in for another verse and chorus, and the crowd went wild, especially when Springsteen added some Billy Ray Cyrus moves, stripping off his flannel shirt and tossing it to a woman in the crowd.
As the crowd clapped and yelled out the words, The Boss noted, 'This is why it's a great song.'
The evening finished with another stunner: an acoustic version of 'Janey Don't You Lose Heart,' which had only been performed by Springsteen once before.
'Throughout the show, Springsteen seemed remarkably relaxed,' wrote Santelli, who is now executive director of The Grammy Museum. 'He artfully created an ambience that made audience members feel that they were indeed privy to witnessing a genuine Springsteen rehearsal. He joked with fans and was unusually talkative between songs. After the show, Springsteen didn't hustle out of the Count Basie, but remained backstage for nearly an hour to talk with friends of the Community Food Bank and sign autographs.'
Interview: Bruce Springsteen talks Light of Day
The fans who left the Basie that night surely knew they had seen something very special. The concert was also successful as a fundraiser, bringing in $37,000 for the charities.
'In the end, everyone seemed to walk away happy, even those Springsteen fans who had waited outside the Count Basie, but were unable to buy tickets since none were offered for sale to the public,' Santelli wrote. 'Their persistence was subsequently rewarded: Just before show time, those diehards willing to make a donation to one of the charities were given tickets from Springsteen's own personal allotment.'
Brych agreed.
'We walked out of there blown away!' Brych said. 'The surprise and shock of the songs performed that night still make for great Bruce conversation to this day.'
Jersey Shore residents have been lucky enough to witness many Springsteen rehearsal shows in the years since, but for sheer surprise factor, it's doubtful anything will ever compare to what happened at the Count Basie that night back in March 1993.
